A suction nozzle (2) connects to a vacuum decanting vessel (1) which connects to the first vacuum chamber (4a) of another vessel. A second chamber (46) in the second vessel (4) has an immersible pump (9) driven by a hydraulic motor (10). When a high level (7) is reached in the first chamber (4a) water is evacuated by the pump through a solenoid valve (12). Water is transferred from the first chamber (4a) to the second chamber (4b) through a flap valve (6). Either or both vessels can be lorry mounted.
