The hand guard (6) is for use with domestic electric food mixers, attached to the handle (1) by two parallel pin-jointed lever arms (7,8) and controlling the electric motor feed. A wheel (9) is mounted on the pin securing the handle (1) end of a lever (8), rotates with the lever, and has a ramped rim notch (10) locating a plunger action motor switch (11). When the arms (7,8) are horizontal, the plunger (11) is located by the notch (10) and the motor circuit is operative. This arm position is given when the screen (6) fits between the motor housing (2) and the rim of the mixer vessel (5). Movement of the arms (7,8) from the horizontal causes the plunger to move out of the notch and retract to cut the motor feed. A spout (6a) may be provided and stops (13,14) may limit downward arm movement.
