Di:methyl:ethylamine prepn. from ethanol and di:methylamine - in presence of copper and chromium oxide catalyst

Dimethylethylamine is prepd. by reacting ethanol with dimethylamine (I) in the presence of hydrogenation- dehydrogenation catalysts. The improvement comprises reacting gaseous EtOH with a gaseous mixt. of hydrogen and (I) in the presence of catalysts based on Cu, chromium oxide and opt. oxides of Ba, Zn, Mg and/or otheroxides, at 1-15 bars absolute and at 180-240 deg. C. The molar ratio (I)/EtOH is 0.25-0.6 and that of H/EtOH is 3-10.
