1393791 Turbines; gas turbine plant L W HEDRICK 13 April 1972 [16 April 1971 13 Sept 1971] 17144/72 Headings F1G and F1T An engine includes a turbine rotor 10 having at least one spiral passageway 26 of outwardly decreasing flow area such that air introduced through a hollow shaft 12 is compressed in flowing through the passageway to enter a mixing region 34 at the self ignition temperature of fuel introduced through a duct 30, the mixture burning in a combustion chamber 72 from which the products issue through tangential nozzle 74 to drive the rotor. Flame holders 70 may be provided. A second spiral passageway 24 may lead to a further mixing region 34 and associated combustion chamber. Cooling water channels (50) supplied through ducts 56, 58 surround passageways 24, 26,.the water vapourizing as it is heated and issuing as steam through additional tangential nozzles to assist rotation of the rotor. Alternatively the steam may be introduced into the combustion chambers. Water may also be added to the air entering shaft 12. A casing 18 having cooling fins 22 and an exhaust pipe 60 surrounds the rotor 10. The fuel may be gasolene, kerosene or alcohol. The rotor 10 may be surrounded by a number of coaxial annular rotors of increasing diameters (100, 100A &c.) Figs.7 and 8 (not shown), each carrying turbine blades in which the combustion gases from the next innermost rotor act. The rotors are thus caused to rotate, adjacent rotors rotating in opposite directions, and they may be inter-connected by gearing so as to rotate at different speeds, the rotor 10 rotating at the highest speed and the outermost rotor at the lowest speed.
