Organic soil improvement agent which may also be used as a plant growth medium contains a mixt. of mature lignin (I) from the heartwood of crushed tree trunks, and crushed young vegetable matter (II) containing cellulose and carbohydrates. The mixt. has a prolonged action, the duration of which may be varied by altering the ratio of (I):(II).
