<p>The thermostat has a capsule (6) containing an expansion material (7) exhibiting a vol. variation in response to the temp. and into which a piston (18) projects. The sides of the capsule (6) are formed to obtain a higher ratio of the surface area to the enclosed vol. than for a cylinder with a circular cross- section. The capsule may have a star-shaped cross-section obtained by joining together adjacent ribs. The capsule (6) may be formed in a number of separate axial sections (8,9) joined together, the end two sections (8,9) having integral end plates (10,11), between which a seal (16) surrounding the piston (18) is fitted. The capsule (6) can be secured within the thermostat housing (1) at a required axial position and the associated valve is attached to the outside of the housing (1).</p> |
