<p>A process for the extraction of aluminum values from clay using nitric acid comprising the steps of pelletizing the clay, calcining the pellets at 1100-1550`F in a fluidized bed reactor, extracting the pellets in about 30-40% nitric acid to produce a basic aluminum nitrate solution, purifying said solution by precipitation of iron oxide, filtering the liquor in the presence of a flocculant to remove silicons impurities, crystalizing aluminum nitrate nonahydrate, decomposing the nonahydrate in at least three steps, calcining the residual metallurgical grade alumina and reconstituting to nitric acid the NO<uX>u gases produced.</p> |
