An oil-water mixture which has entered the hull of an oil slick collecting ship through a slot in the side is separated in a main chamber, preceded by an antechamber. The main chamber is kept at a negative pressure and is separated by partitions which imposes a zigzag path on the mixture. The intake for an oil suction pump is arranged near the top and that for a water suction pump near the top and that for a water suction pump near the bottom of the main chamber end wall. This requires no pumps or revolving drums for the separation process itself and recovers the oil at a high efficiency.
