PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon catalyst for SO3/SO2 conversion having high SO3/SO2 converting activity by treating a carbon material with an oxidizing acid followed by heat treatment at a predetermined temp. in an inert gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A carbon material such as carbon black is treated with an oxidizing acid such as nitric acid-sulfuric acid mixture, nitric acid or hot concd. sulfuric acid. The acid treated material is preferably washed with pure water or the like and dried at about 150 deg.C for about 3hr in an inert gas atmosphere. The dried material is then activated by heating at 300-700 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere. The resulting carbon material has high SO3/SO2 converting activity, high flame resistance, that is, high endurance and a long life. |
