PURPOSE:To make recording of half tone possible, by controlling the output voltage of matrix intersections by the pulse width of the output of an X-side switching circuit and by controlling this pulse width according to intermediate information of the picture signal. CONSTITUTION:Picture signal PIXS4 is digitized by A/D converter 8 and is input to shift register 9. Each register 9 transfers information to corresponding counter 10 to preset counter 10 each time information reaches m-number bits. Counter 10 outputs signal S11 having a pulse width corresponding to this information. That is, picture signal PIX is applied to m-number high-voltage switching circuits 4 collectively. At this time, intermediate information has been converted to the pulse width. Signal S11 which is processed in this manner is input to matrix circuit 12 together with singal S9 from switching circuit 5. Circuit 12 supplies signal S12 to recording electrode 13. The electrostatic latent image of an electric charge quantity corresponding to the creset value of signal S12 is formed on recording medium 14 and is developed to obtain a desired visible image.
