The mechanical random number generator uses mechanical stampings for each of the components to produce a compact and cheap device which may be easily mass produced. Pushing a pivoted (22) lever (21) operates a pawl (28) around another pivot (24). A pinion (25), mounted on the same shaft as the number indicating needle, has ratchet teeth which allow the pawl to slide over it in this phase of operation. After the operating lever (21) has passed through a small angle it passes clear of the pawl (28), the latter returning rapidly to its original position under spring force (27), and giving a sharp impact to the pinion (25), which sets the indicating needle spinning. A slot (38) in the operating lever (21) allows it to return to its original position when slightly lifted.
