The current collector for electric vehicles includes two cross-shaped rotatable supports (b,c) mounted a set distance apart on a single stand (e). On each of the ends of the cross supports are scissors type cable grips (d). These grips are weighted so that they close on the overhead cable when in the upright position but otherwise lie open. In an electric vehicle system alternate positive and negative cables are provided lying parallel. The two cross shaped arms grip two adjacent cables of opposite polarity, although by rotating through 90 degrees they are able to move to two adjacent cables. This facilitates crossing over an interchange in the vehicle network.
