The open-topped display refrigerator can be operated to a refrigerating or a defrosting cycle as desired, having a base and four sidewalls. A single air passage extends along the first sidewall (4), the base (8) and the second one (6) opposite the first, between openings (24,22) at the tops of the sidewalls, the air passing over a refrigeration unit (16) in the passage. Air is circulated by a fan (14) in the forward direction when refrigerating, the fan and the flow being reversed for defrosting. During the latter operation the air discharged from the passage end is directed away from the refrigerator, so that it cannot recirculate.
