The power sander may be used on automobile body repairs, deploying a revolving abrasive disc (4), and including a reference plate (8) which is built onto the disc housing (6). The underside (8a) of the plate may extend the plane (P) containing the active disc face (4), being applied to a reference surface to control the thickness of material removed during a sanding operation. A stack of discs may be mounted on a rotatable plate (2), the face (8a) being offset the requisite distance below the plate. A ball joint (3) may allow the housing (6) and plate (2) to rock relative to the drive shaft (1), and the plate may join the housing over an arc of less than 180 degrees.
