The remote diagnostic system is for a central service station serving pref. several, differently-placed installations whose controls operate through microprocessors, e.g. lifts, stackers, printing machines. The central station has a large computer programmed with test programs for detection of possible faults in the controlling of the customer service installations. The customer service installation in use can be automatically coupled to the large computer as necessary to initiate a dialogue for detection, evaluation and directions for removal of faults by return of information to the service installation concerned. The coupling between the service installation (1) and the computer can occur at definite intervals according to a predetermined program or, alternatively, by the occurrence of a definite fault.
