A collector for solar energy comprises a conduit (4), which may be in the form of a heat pipe or may contain a heat pipe, positioned within an outer glass tube (2), at least a portion of the outer surface of the conduit being constructed and arranged to support one or more solar cells (6). A compound parabolic reflector (8) within the outer glass tube is arranged to focus incident radiation upon the conduit and solar cells. The ends of the outer glass tube are sealed and the space between the outer glass tube of the conduit is evacuated. The collector may be used to obtain both electricity and heat, e.g. hot water, simultaneously by absorption of solar energy.
