PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration of the transmission characteristics of an optical cable at low temp. by using carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) as the tension member of the cable. CONSTITUTION:CFRP is used as central tension member 1 of the optical cable, and six optical fibers 2 are twisted around member 1 and pressed with polyester tape 3. The linear expansion coefficient of this CFRP is negative, so it undergoes expansion, not contraction at low temp. Accordingly, when CFRP is used as member 1, it does not contract to such an extent that microbending occurs in optical fibers 2 twisted around member 1, and deterioration of the transmission characteristics of the resulting optical cable at low temp. can be prevented perfectly. |
