Piston for diesel engine - has bolts between crown and skirt projecting into combustion space to aid combustion

The piston has a skirt (12) and a separate crown (11). The crown is fixed to the skirt by bolts (13) inserted from the combustion chamber side on the outside of the crown. The heads (14) of the bolts are left projecting above the crown and form hot spots on which injected fuel vapourises and combustion commences. This makes it unnecessary to thicken the crown to accept socket type heads and thus reduces the weight of the piston. It also makes it unnecessary to insert special hot spots. The bolt heads (14) have raised castellations (15) which improve the hot spot action.
