Faster switching of gas discharge cells for displays is ensured by an after-glow grid electrode which maintains an almost non-discernable discharge with the cathode when the anode is not excited. The application of the required voltage to anode (2) results in a transfer of the discharge from the gap between cathode (4) and grid (3) to the anode-cathode gap. The current is then limited by the series resistor (R).
