The forklift truck attachment has a load supporting surface and holder, with a pressure plate movable towards the surface in a direction parallel to a column. The column assembly comprises two columns (20,21), of rectangular section joined together and with lengthwise cylindrical bores, from which slots extend on the inside. A guide member (28) slides in each bore, and two such members are joined to each other by a connector (27) and also to the load pressure plate (32) and to one part of a piston-cylinder (26). The other part of the latter is coupled to the columns or their mounting (23). The connector is preferably in the form of a bent plate, whose bend surrounds a part of the piston-cylinder unit.
