APPARATUS FOR THE FILTRATION OF MOLTEN METAL

The disclosure describes an apparatus for filtering molten metal used in the production of castings. The apparatus comprises a furnace crucible which can be charged with molten metal. A ladling crucible is positioned in the molten metal within the furnace crucible. The latter is formed at least in part of a ceramic foam material having an open cell structure which is characterized by a plurality of interconnected voids surrounded by a web of ceramic. This apparatus is inexpensive to utilize and has high filtration efficiency.
