Documents (16) fed or transported in a device can be endorsed using a print wheel (11, 14) made of a porous, self-inking material (4) such as neoprene. The endorsement apparatus prints only when documents are present. Furthermore, the endorsement wheel can itself contain additional self-inking type wheels that can be easily set to obtain a plurality of distinct "endorsements".
