The sluice duct (10) has an inlet duct (35) and an outlet duct (36) each of truncated-pyramidical form and with their smaller ends adjacent. A short throat separates the inlet duct and the outlet duct. It has a cross-sectional area of about half the cross-sectional area of each larger end of the inlet duct and the outlet duct. The inlet duct has an included angle of from about 30deg. to 50 deg and an axial length of from about 0.2 to 0.3 of the axial length of the sluice duct. The outlet duct has an included angle of from about 11 deg. to 19 deg. A forward wave energy dissipator (15) in the form of an apertured wall is positioned in front of a wall (16) which extends above the sluice duct to prevent tidal water from flowing over the caisson (8). A similar dissipator is positioned at the rear of the caisson. The gate (11) is suspended from a chair (20) raised or lowered by a winch (21) located in a control building (22) which extends across the top of the caisson.
