The invention concerns a method of reliable error recognition for transmission of binary data signals, in which several successive characters are protected by a parity bit, and the transmission system operates with difference coding and/or an asynchronous scrambler on the transmitting side, and difference coding and/or an asynchronous descrambler on the receiving side. Because of this difference coding and/or the descrambler, an error which occurs in the transmission system (Ü) is multiplied into an even-numbered multiple error. So that this can be recognised, on the receiving side a recoding is provided, to separate the wrong bits so far from each other that only one wrong bit occurs in any one block. This can be recognised by the parity check. On the transmitting side, a precoding is provided, which is the converse of the recoding and cancels it. The devices for precoding and recoding are constructed of modulo-2 adders (M1 ... Mn), and delay elements assigned to them with different delay times (T, 2T, 4T, ... 2<(n-1)>T). <IMAGE>
