<p>A plant to collect oil slicks floating in harbours or other surface waters consists of a floating cylindrical tank, made of plastic, with a platform and a pump. A long band is kept afloat and standing on edge by plastic foam or air cushions and carries at the end a motorised and remote controlled float. The float is directed in a circle back to the floating tank so that it encloses the oil slick in a loop. By moving the band through a slit, it is cleaned and the loop is narrowed until the pump can pick up the collected oil. This method interferes less with the ecology than detergents. The oil can be re-used.</p> |
