The two parallel support plates are firmly coupled by a sealing frame, forming a chamber filled with a liq. crystal layer. The two support plates are spaced by distance pieces (14) of elongated type with rectangular cross section, which abut with their surfaces the two support plates (2,3). The distance pieces may be of glass, plastics, or a metal oxide. They are of specified geometry relative to their height, width and length. They are hollow and may have an inner core and a compression sheath. Some distance pieces are contained in the frame and may be electrically conductive on the surface consisting in this instance of aluminium coated quartz blast fibres. The arrangement provides secure distancing of both support plates, as well as use of materials safeguarding long service life.
