A speedometer with an indicator needle moving in front of a scale enables the speed indicated at the time of a sudden change of speed in excess of a given level of deceleration or acceleration to be frozen for subsequent reading. In partic. this enables determination of whether a vehicle has been shunted into one in front or struck from behind after hitting the vehicle in front. The indicator clamp mechanism is mounted in front of or behind the needle and actuated by forces greater than those occurring in normal driving. The needle is solid and of elastic material. A parallel needle connected to the indicator needle moves behind the display scale. The arresting mechanism operates magnetically or mechanically using hooks.
