The adjustable roller-type steady rest supports long work to be machined on a lathe, comprising a slide travelling on lengthwise guides in the lathe bed, and with two adjustable roller supports symmetrical to the lathe centre. One of the supports (10) moves at the end furthest from its roller (12) over a sloping guide face (9) on the slide (8), this face running parallel to the line connecting the lathe centre (7) and the roller axis (13) of the support (10) moving over it. The other support (14) telescopes on the slide towards the centre (7), and at right angles to this face (9).
