Alkylene glycol diether prepn. by reacting a lower alkyl gp.- contg. ether with an alkylene oxide in the presence of BF3 and/or SnCl4, takes place in the presence of an active H atom-contg. cpd. (A). Water, alcohols, carboxylic acids, phenols, sulphonic acids, mercaptans and hydroxamic acids are the pref. (A) used with BF3, while water, alcohols, carboxylic acids, phenols and sulphonic acids are the pref. (A) used with SnCl4. The mono- or poly-glycol diethers obtd. are used as polar solvents, e.g. absorption solvents for acid gases or for fluorocarbons in refrigerators.
