Prodn. of 1-(t-butylperoxy)ethyl methacrylate (I) is carried out by reacting an alkyl peroxide deriv., esp. 1-chloroethyl t-butyl peroxide (II), with an acrylic acid deriv., esp. methacrylic acid (III), at 20-70 degrees C. in petroleum ether in the presence of NEt3 as catalyst. - (I) is useful as polymerisation initiator for vinyl monomers, a vulcanising agent for rubber, and a monomer for the prodn. of reactive copolymers with vinyl cpds. - The process is simple and gives higher yields than prior art processes (e.g. 90-92%). |
