Orientation layer prodn. for liquid crystal display - by exposing radiation sensitive coating in strips using modulated ray

In the prodn. of a liq. crystal display with an orientation layer on the electrode coating inside each carrier plate, (at least) one of the orientation layers is produced as follows. The electrode layer is first given a radiation-sensitive coating. Parallel strips of the coating are exposed to suitable radiation, then developed to give a pattern of parallel grooves, the strip pattern being produced by passing a modulated ray over the coating. The process gives at least as good results as oblique evapn. but can be incorporated in mass prodn. more easily and gives homeotropic orientation without special additional precautions.
