PURPOSE:To improve the leak proofness of an alkaline battery by the alkoxylation of hydroxyl groups on the surface of the negative electrode side metal sealing member to be brought into contact with a sealing gasket. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 6 of a substance such as silver oxide is placed in a case 3 which electrode also serves as a positive electrode terminal, and a separator layer 5 is provided on it. A negative electrode 4 of zinc is inserted in a sealing plate 1 which also serves as a negative electrode terminal. The case 3 and sealing plate 1 are coupled providing a gasket 2 between them, and sealed to form a battery. The sealing plate 1 which will be the negative electrode terminal of the battery is made of, for example, nickel-plated iron, and hydroxyl groups on the surface in contact with the gasket 2 is alkoxylated. Hydroxyl groups on the metal surface are reacted with an alcohol to yield an ester. Then, the hydroxyl groups on the surface are alkoxylated, making the surface water-repellent. |
