The IC engine has one or more cylinders containing pistons coupled to a crankshaft by connecting rods, together with a sparking plug or fuel-injection nozzle in the cylinder head. A fresh air intake (18) and an exhaust outlet (19) are provided in the part of the cylinder (14,15) furthest from the head, these being situated diametrally opposite each other in relation to the cylinder axis. Control of the scavenging operation is by the piston itself (12). The edge of the exhaust port can be nearer to the head than that of the inlet port, and the fresh air can be supplied by a pressure-charger.
