The present invention provides an apparatus for use in butt fusing plastics piping. The apparatus comprises two substantially parallel guide rods 16, 18 on which two clamping heads 12, 14 are mounted. The heads 12, 14 serve to clamp adjacent end portions of two piping lengths in axial alignment, and at least one of the clamping heads 12, 14 is hydraulically or pneumatically coupled to one or both guide rods 16, 18 so as to be hydraulically or pneumatically displaceable along the guide rods 16, 18 towards and away from the other clamping head. As shown each guide rod 16, 18 passes through projections 24 on the heads 12, 14 and is provided with a bore 20 for feeding fluid to and from cylinders 26 provided in the projections 24.
