<p>Alkenes and/or alkadienes are oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of an antimony catalyst to produce oxole compounds, such as furan, without substantial conversion of the oxole compounds to undesirable products. The catalyst preferably has the formula

wherein A is one or more of the following elements:

<UnorderedLists id="ula03" listStyle="none"><ListItem>Ag, Cu, Mo, V, W, Bi, Te, As, Se, Cr, Zr, Pb, Nb, Ti, Zn, Cd, alkaline earth elements and alkali metal elements; and</ListItem></UnorderedLists></ListItem></UnorderedLists>
wherein a is 0 - 10;
<UnorderedLists id="ula04" listStyle="none"><ListItem>bisO-10;</ListItem><ListItem>c is 1-10;</ListItem><ListItem>d is 0-20; and</ListItem><ListItem>x is the number of oxygens required to satisfy the valence requirements of the other elements present.</ListItem></UnorderedLists></p><p>In a particular embodiment butadiene is converted to furan by contacting it with air in the presence of a catalyst comprising an oxide complex of antimony and phosphorous.</p> |
