The charging device comprises a container (8) with an open side and a rack bottom (12). When not in operation, the container is disposed substantially horizontally on the open-topped tank (5) hydraulically connected to the furnace chamber (2), so that the bath of molten metal extends into the tank. The container (8) is supported on lateral guides (21, 22, 23, 24) and is actuated by jacks (18) which force it, due to the presence of these guides (21, 22, 23, 24), to tilt gradually and to lift, so that the material present in the container (8) discharges into the tank (5) issuing from the open side of the container. The emptied container (8) is placed back onto the tank (5), in order to reassume the initial horizontal position and to press with its bottom (12) on any material which may be floating on the tank itself. The furnace can be used for smelting aluminium or its alloys. <IMAGE>
