A herbicidal composition comprising as active ingredient a 3- phenoxybenzyl alcohol derivative having the general formula:- <IMAGE> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group or an alkoxycarbonylmethyl group or an acyl group of formula R<2>CO-, wherein R<2> is an alkyl or aryl group optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms; or R is an aryloxymethylcarbonyl group optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms or alkyl groups or an optionally substituted 5- or 6- membered heterocyclic ring system; R<1> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; X is a halogen atom and n=0, 1, 2 or 3, together with a carrier and/or a surface-active agent. Certain of the compounds are stated to be novel and can be made by (a) reacting an appropriate aldehyde with a bromomagnesium acetylide under Grignard conditions or (b) reacting an alcohol with an alkylating agent RBr or an acid chloride RCOCl. |
