Working or shaping of diamonds - by heating with carbon-dissolving metal pattern

Working of diamonds is carried out by contacting the diamond with a suitable pattern at 600-1800 degrees C. under conditions such that the diamond and the pattern are at the same temp. The pattern is made of a metal or alloy capable of dissolving carbon from the diamond at the working temp. The process is carried out in vacuo, in an inert gas atmos., or in a gas which does not react with diamond but does react with the dissolved carbon at the working temp. The process can be used, e.g. to engrave, cut or bore diamonds for the prodn. of monocrystalline diamond tools or jewellery. The diamonds can be worked with high precision without the need for complicated equipment or procedures.
