2-Alkylamino methyl propionates (I) of formula ArXC(Me) (COOY)CH2NHR and their salts are new (where Ar is phenyl opt. substd. by one or more of Cl, Br, F, OH, CF3, 1-3C alkyl or alkoxy, or it is a 3,4-methylene dioxy phenyl gp.; X is CO or CHOH; Y is 1-3C alkyl; R is 1-8C alkyl). Specifically claimed cpds. are, (I; Y is -C2H5; R is -CH(CH3)2)- (i) Ar is phenyl X is CO (ii) Ar is phenyl; X is CHOH and (iii) Ar is 3,4-methylene dioxyphenyl; X is CO, are specifically claimed. The cpds. act on the CNS, and are used esp. as tranquilisers. (I) is given orally at a dosage of 5-10 mg 3 times daily.
