In order to eliminate the noxious substances arising in the operation of oil-fired and gas-fired central heating installations, the waste gases are taken off from a boiler zone of relatively low temperature, which preferably is only a little above the dew point of sulphur dioxide (70 to 75 DEG C), liquefied by cooling and adjusted by chemical conversion, for example by reaction with a neutralising substance, to a pH permitted for disposal.
