The guards against overheating of a catalytic reactor used to purify vehicle exhaust fumes. The auxiliary reactor which is fitted between the exhaust manifold and the main catalytic reactor to be protected. Any unburnt hydrocarbons discharged by the exhaust manifold are at least partly oxidised so that the oxygen content if fumes reaching the main catalytic reactor is greatly reduced. The auxiliary catalyser is inexpensive, small and easily renewable and protects the more expensive main reactor.
