The flame luminous yield and brightness of a kerosene lamp is increased by preheating the air delivered to the flame for combustion, thus increasing the flame temperature. Typically this air can be heated by the combustion gases in a heat exchanger formed by an encased tube of folded sheet metal. The heat exchanger and the flame are insulated by a glass cylinder, partly reflective and evacuated. The design increases the brightness of the lamp flame, without the need for pressure feed, or a mantle.
