A pair of flat tongs (10) are used to remove the bones wherein the jaws (11,12) of the tongs project at right angles away from the ends of the levers (13,14). The jaws themselves have at least at their free ends, cutter-like end edges (22,23) which meet each other along a smooth curve. These tongs can now firmly grip a slightly protruding fish bone which can be drawn out from the fresh fish by a slight swivel movement.
