The mechanical multi-row defoliator for potato plants or the like comprises a main frame (1) which carries pairs of contra-rotating rollers (10,11) to catch the foliage between them. The roller pairs are suspended in a sub-frame (2-9) capable of moving the rollers in any direction relative to the frame (1). The movement is controlled by slide shoe plates (19,20) which follow the ploughed rows in the field. The sub-frame may consist of rods (2-9) which are intercoupled via ball joints (27-36). The slide shoes may be coupled via pivoted lever arms (22-26) and may be spring-loaded (21) towards one another.
