An automatic steering mechanism for a sod harvester (2) has a shoe (24,170,24 sec ) which follows the cut edge (20) of a strip of sod. The shoe has a working edge (28,164,172,300) which slides along the cut sod edge and penetrates slightly into it, to resist the tendency of the shoe to ride up over the cut edge. A ramp (38,182,302) on the front of the shoe is also spaced away from the working edge for the same reason. The shoe is mounted on an arm (26) which in one embodiment actuates a pair of automobile points (104,106) which transmit steering signals to a solenoid hydraulic steering valve (122). A mechanical connection (102,100,96,94,92,90,76) between the steered wheels (6) and the socket (66) housing the automobile points (104,106) provides feedback. In another embodiment the arm (26 min ) is mechanically connected to and moves a valve shuttle bracket (204) which operates the hydraulic steering valve (122 min ). Mechanical feedback in this case is to a mounting block (224) on which the steering valve (122 min ) is mounted.
