Treatment of sludge from a scrubber used to reduce the SOx content of a gas is carried out by (a) collecting the spent solids from a fluidised-bed combustion unit of the type in which a carbonaceous fuel is combusted in contact with SOx-capturing lime or limestone particles; (b) separating lime from the spent solids to leave a ppte.; and (c) mixing the ppte. with the scrubber sludge.. The ppte. sludge mixt. is readily dewatered and can be converted to materials with high dimensional stability, high mechanical strength and low water-permeability. These materials can be used for land reclamation, as embankments, dykes, pond liners, bridge abutments, etc.
