PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound having a pharmacological activity, in high yield and purity, by the oxidation of a compound, e.g. 6-(10'-hydroxydecyl)-2,3- dimethoxy-5-methylphenol, with O2 or air, in the presence of a transition metal complex. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I [R1 is lower alkyl or alkoxy, and two R1s are bonded into -CH=CH-CH=CH-; one of X1 and X2 is OH or NH2 and the other is H, or esterified or etherified OH; n is an integer 0-9; when n is 1-9, A is -CH2-, -CO-, etc., and B is OH, lower acyloxy, lower alkoxy, etc.; and when n is 0, -A-(CH2)n-B is formula II (m is an integer 0-12) and B is H] is oxidized with O2 or air, in the presence of such a transition metal complex as a cobalt one, e.g. bis(salicylidene)ethylenediiminocobalt (II), which may from an oxygen complex with oxygen reversibly, to give a quinone derivative of formula III, having a stabilizing action on a lysosome membrane, immunity regulating action, etc.
