The coil holding device comprises one or more rotary drums (4) supported at one end for rotation about a generally horizontal axis. An end plate (8) adjacent the support (3) incorporates a spiral groove (5) in the surface running in the opposite sense to the direction of rotation. The groove effectively moves towards the end plate (8) during rotation. A coil (A) mounted on the drum is guided by the groove and is maintained in position on the drum.
