The machine assembles rectangular straw bales into sets. It is mounted on a trailer and has a receiving mechanism for the incoming bales in their lengthwise direction from a pick-up. In a first operation the bales are thrust one by one into a lengthwise row, and in subsequent ones several rows are assembled alongside each other and tied together in a packet. The receiving mechanism (5,6,7) tilts each incoming bale about a horizontal transverse axis (26), delivering it (9) standing upright ready to be thrust into the lengthwise row.
