The flasher unit (1) includes a snap-action switch with main contacts (14a,25) and auxiliary contacts (15,127) in series with a resistance wire (23) so that the lamps (3) of the direction indicators are alternately illuminated at full and reduced brightness. The flasher device (1) is provided with an additional electromagnetic switch (201) for controlling flow of current through a repeater lamp (4) to indicate a fault in one or more of the lamps (3). The electromagnetic switch (201) is arranged to sense the load current to the lamps (3) and the indication that a fault exists is in the form that the repeater lamp (4) does not light at all.
